Join Millions for International ShakeOut Day!

Staff Report / Modestolocal.org

On Thursday, October 17, millions around the globe will participate in International ShakeOut Day by joining earthquake drills at their workplaces, schools, and homes. The Modesto Fire Department is encouraging everyone to take part in this important event.

At 10:17 a.m., participants are asked to practice earthquake safety by following three key actions: drop, cover, and hold on. This annual drill aims to enhance awareness about emergency preparedness and instruct individuals on the essential measures to take during an earthquake.

Residents are reminded that even a small tremor could signal the beginning of a larger earthquake. To protect yourself, the following steps are recommended:

1. **DROP** to your hands and knees to avoid being knocked down and to allow yourself to crawl to nearby shelter if available.

2. **COVER** your head and neck with one arm and hand. If a sturdy table or desk is close, crawl underneath it for protection. If no shelter is available, crawl next to an interior wall, away from windows, and stay on your knees while bending over to shield your vital organs.

3. **HOLD ON** until the shaking stops. If you are under shelter, hold onto it with one hand and be prepared to move with it if it shifts. If there is no shelter, protect your head and neck with both arms and hands.

Educators looking for additional resources can find ShakeOut Classroom Materials, including lesson plans and videos for all grade levels, at [ShakeOut Classroom Resources](https://www.shakeout.org/schools/).

Participants are encouraged to share their experiences on ShakeOut Day using the hashtag #ShakeOut2024.
