Flint Senior Center Remains Open, Dispels Closure Rumors

Staff Report / Flintlocal.org

The City of Flint has clarified that the Hasselbring Senior Center is not closing or being sold, and remains open free of charge to all senior citizens. There are no plans to change this arrangement in the future.

The city is currently negotiating a new lease agreement with the service provider that manages the center, following the expiration of the previous lease in January 2024. A primary concern in these negotiations is the service provider's continued use of alcohol at events in the city-owned facility, which is prohibited on all City of Flint properties due to insurance regulations. The city has issued multiple cease-and-desist orders regarding this issue, as unauthorized activities have been ongoing.

Additionally, the service provider has not been reporting financial information from the rental events held at the center, which impacts the city's ability to track funds associated with the facility. The City of Flint aims to enhance the financial and operational management of the center to ensure that activities for seniors remain cost-free.

On August 20, 2024, the City issued a bid for new management of the Hasselbring Senior Center but did not receive any responses. Additionally, a hiring process is underway for a new senior center director.

Funding from the Genesee County Senior Millage will continue to support operations at the center, irrespective of the service provider. Currently, one-third of this funding goes toward the salary of the service provider’s executive director, while two-thirds is allocated for senior activities. The City is looking for a solution that would allow all millage funds to directly benefit services for seniors.
