Rethinking Lawns: A Sustainable Future Ahead

Staff Report /

Scientists at the Chicago Botanic Garden are working on a project aimed at rethinking traditional lawns. Lawns are currently the largest irrigated crop in America, consuming three times more land than corn.

The project, established in June 2022, involves test plots designed to explore alternative ground covers and support plants that can store carbon and improve soil health. Over the next three years, the team will monitor how these experimental lawns perform with their diverse plantings.

The initiative is supported by a five-year grant totaling $1.76 million from the National Science Foundation and the Paul G. Allen Family Foundation. The research is being conducted in partnership with the Chicago Park District and the University of Michigan-Flint.
